The Action Paradigm

A foundational quantitative sports analytics framework measuring physical Action Units rather than empirical linear regression weights.

The Paired Evaluation Ecosystem

No single metric can simultaneously capture vacuum skill and contextual field impact. All evaluations must pair Direct Action and Total Action.

DA/PA+

Direct Action

Pure Player Skill & Execution

"Who is out there doing a great job playing baseball at the plate?"

  • Immune to Lineup/Situational Luck
  • Measures exact physical execution
TA/PA+

Total Action

Contextual & Situational Impact

"Who produced the most total action given the opportunities they were placed in?"

  • Captures Baserunning & Advancement Chaos
  • Holistic field impact

Canonical Formulas

Offensive Action

Direct Action (DA):
DA = (1 × 1B) + (2 × 2B) + (3 × 3B) + (4 × HR) + (1 × BB) + (1 × HBP) + (0.5 × SF) + (0.5 × SH)
Total Action (TA):
TA = DA + (1.0 × SB) - (1.0 × CS) + Advancement Bonus

Advancement Bonus = 0.5 × max(0, R - HR - SB)

Pitching Action

Pitcher Direct Action (PDA):
PDA = (Outs Recorded × 1.0) + (Double Plays Induced × 2.0) - Base Penalties

Base Penalties = 1B + 2(2B) + 3(3B) + 4(HR) + BB + HBP
Pitcher Total Action (PTA):
PTA = PDA + (0.5 × SO) - (0.5 × SB Allowed) + (0.5 × CS Induced)
